About HomeSwitches
Last updated August 2026.
HomeSwitches helps you pick a router that runs open firmware - OpenWrt or OPNsense - using specs instead of marketing.
What we do
- Compare routers by open-firmware support, not by star ratings. Every device is tagged with its OpenWrt status and the release it landed in.
- Surface the specs that actually decide it. Flash size and RAM decide whether a modern OpenWrt build even fits; the radios and SoC decide throughput. We put those front and centre.
- Flag the gotchas before you buy. Too-small flash, exploit-only flashing, dual-firmware quirks, boards with no onboard WiFi - the traps that turn a cheap router into a brick.
Our principles
- Independent. Rankings follow the data, not affiliate commissions. We flag hardware that OpenWrt supports poorly even when a link would pay us.
- Honest about limits. Where support is community-only, snapshot-only, or vendor-fork rather than mainline, we say so instead of writing "supported" and leaving it there.
- Open firmware first. We are here for people who intend to flash OpenWrt or run OPNsense, not for stock-firmware mesh shopping.
How we make money
Through affiliate commissions when you buy via our links, at no extra cost to you - see our Affiliate Disclosure.
